Chapter 14
Obesity is a growing concern in our society that is affecting more and more adolescents as the years progress. Obesity is defined as body weight that is more than twenty percent above the average weight. Being obese during this crucial time in a teenagers lives can cause depression and severe health problems. Being obese is one extreme and being anorexic or bulimic is the other. Anorexia nervosa is when a person doesn’t eat to prevent from gaining weight and they don’t see anything wrong with their body. Bulimia is when a person binges on large amounts of food and then purges the food by vomiting or taking laxatives. This can be caused by many factors, but the media definately has an influence on the way teenagers, especially girls, view themselves. They feel they have to live up to some fake magazine like image to impress people and to feel pretty. Now more and more magazines are portraying average sized women and hopefully girls will be able to see themselves in them and realize they should love themselves for who they are and not what others want them to be.
