Chapter 8
In Chapter eight, the section about sleep caught my attention. I found it really interesting that so many preschoolers experience nightmares and some even night terrors. I began to think about what might cause children this young (between 3 and 5) to have such bad dreams. I remember having nightmares when I was little and how much they scared me and I would have them maybe twice a week. Personally, I know why I was having bad dreams because I would stay up late with my older brother and watch scary movies like “IT†and “Child’s Play.†But I’m really curious as to what other children experience in their daily lives that causes their nightmares. I’m also wondering if nightmares tend to decrease or increase with age. To me, I would assume they increase because as people get older they have more stresses in their daily lives and are aware of more social and political conflicts in the world. What do y’all think?

I have two daughters, one is almost 11 and the other 6. My six year old still has bad dreams some, but does not occur as often as they did in the past. My older daughter sleeps so hard that I don’t think she dreams!!! She does not talk much about having bad dreams or dreams in general. And, if either of them would due to stress, it would be her. She is much more anxious about things and at a younger age, she did seem to have more bad dreams where she would want me to sleep with her. It seems like most of her dreams were associated with something happening to me or her dad. She was always very afraid that we would not come home one day. That to has passed. But neither of them watch scary movies or much TV at all. I am glad they did not experience night terrors. I think when I am stressed, I don’t sleep enough to dream. I have a hard time getting to sleep and staying a sleep. When I do drift off, it seems I am thinking about what is stressing me out.
